Using a Large Bird Cage in Your Outdoor Decor

A large bird cage makes a charming and fascinating addition to your lawn or garden decoration. Unless you live in the tropics or a sub-tropical region, its unlikely that you would actually use the bird cage for housing birds, but a large bird cage has a myriad of decorative uses for any garden.

The first and most obvious is as a trellis of sorts. Place your climbing plants in and around the large bird cage, either in pots or planted directly into the soil, and as they grow, train them to twine around the bars of the bird cage. If you like, you can place a small piece of garden statuary inside the birdcage; the vines twining around the cage itself will create a little room, a little enclave, with the statuary or figurine ensconced inside. Most lovely of all, of course, is when some goldfinch or house wren decides to build a nest in the shady, sheltered greenery. Nothing can be more lovely, more spontaneous, and yet more appropriate, than that!

A large bird cage can also be used as garden statuary in itself. Nestle them into the landscaping, set them off by themselves, or even fill them with artificial birds (be sure the birds are waterproof first) to add an element of elegance or whimsey to your garden. Of course, if you do live in a tropical or subtropical area, and already keep birds in a large bird cage outside part of the time, nothing can be more perfect than to make your bird cages part of your garden decor, birds and all. Nothing is as lovely as a tropical garden with parrots or macaws living happily in it. But it isn't advised that you attempt to purchase or raise birds specifically for the sake of making your garden look nice. Like other pets, birds require care and attention.

Finally, a less decorative but more practical use for your large bird cage is to keep rabbits, deer, and other garden terrorists away from tender potted plants. A large bird cage makes an enchanting and whimsical plant protector, far more interesting than most cages that were designed for that purpose.
