The Importance of the Right Parakeet Cage

It would be easy to overlook the importance of the parakeet cage when you are looking at purchasing a parakeet, but it would also be a terrible mistake. Your parakeet cage will be the bird's home, his refuge, his safe place, and it can make the difference between a cheerful, healthy parakeet and a sick or depressed one.

The most important aspect of a parakeet cage is its size. Parakeets are small birds, but they need large cages. Additionally, parakeets are flocking birds. You may start with just one, but eventually, it will be important to get at least one companion for your parakeet, since it will almost certainly be impossible for you to spend every waking moment with your parakeet, and a parakeet should not be left alone. It has a negative effect on their health, both physical and mental. Therefore, it is important that your parakeet cage be large enough to hold at least two parakeets, possibly more, with plenty of room for both or all of them. Additionally, it should be large horizontally, rather than vertically. Parakeets cannot fly straight up and down, so a tall cage becomes just so much wasted space.

Additionally, it will be important to have plenty of room for toys in your parakeet cage, and to make sure it's easy to access the inside of the cage to change out the toys. A parakeet will get bored as easily as a human, so it's important to give them fun new toys to play with on a regular basis. At the same time, you want him to feel comfortable in his cage. Never change out all the toys at once.

It's essential that your parakeet cage be kept clean. A dirty cage is unhealthy for the bird; it promotes disease and may even kill them. Keep clean newspaper at the bottom of the cage; change it out at least once or twice a day, more often if the cage is shared by several parakeets. Clean the cage and all the toys inside it with warm water and mild dish soap every month or so. Never use harsh chemicals, as these can make your parakeet sick or even kill him. And always dry everything before putting it back together.
