Cleaning and Care of Your Parrot Cage

No one likes to clean their parrot cage, of course. It's one of those tasks that normally gets delegated as far down the chain of command in the home as possible--and then gets neglected and ends up being done by Mom or Dad, anyway.  But the secret to keeping parrot cage cleaning from being too nasty is to clean it often and thoroughly.

At least once a day, the parrot cage should receive a cursory cleaning. When changing the tray to catch the droppings, don't just empty it; rinse it (outside!) with cold water and scrub it lightly with a wire bristle brush or a steel wool scouring pad. Lightly pat the cage dry with an old towel set aside for that purpose before putting newspapers back in it and replacing it at the bottom of the cage.

Once a week, clean the tray at the bottom of the cage with mild dish soap and warm water. You may also want to wipe it down with bleach or some other antibacterial.  This prevents germs that might otherwise accumulate from spreading to your house and family, and keeps your parrot or parrots from getting diseases.

Also once a week, wipe down the cage bars with antibacterial wipes. This can be time consuming, as you want to get around each individual bar, and your parrot will no doubt be all too eager to 'help' you, but it's well worth it. A clean parrot cage is a pleasant parrot cage, and makes for a happy, healthy parrot.

In addition, from time to time you should remove any toys in the cage and thoroughly cleanse them. This, however, need only be done every couple of months, as it can be difficult to get the toys out. (A word of advice; if possible, place your parrot into a small carrier cage and leave the toys in to clean them. This is easier, since you don't end up having to wrestle with the parrot to get the toys out, you don't have to wrestle with the toys themselves to get them loose, and there's no chance of the parrot escaping while you're trying to get the toys out to clean them.)

Cleaning a parrot cage is something that should be done on a regular basis. It's one of the most important parts of caring for your parrot.
